Rev. Father Apostolos N. Georgiafentis, Protopresbyter
Father Apostolos N. Georgiafentis was born in Chicago to the Archon Protopsalti Nicolaos and Katherine Georgiafentis. As his father, of blessed memory, served as the head chanter of Assumption Greek Orthodox Church in Chicago, Fr. Apostolos and his sisters were raised in the life of the church. Guided by his father, he spent much of his teenage years studying chant, recognizing it to be an expression of love for Christ and His church. At the age of 15, Fr. Apostolos received his first assignment as the Chanter of Holy Apostles Church in Westchester, Illinois.
After graduating from Lake Park High School in Roselle, Illinois, Fr. Apostolos attended the University of Illinois for one year when, moved by the Holy Spirit, he began his studies for the priesthood at Hellenic College in Brookline, Massachusetts. It was there that he met his wife, Presbytera Sophia, whom he married on July 12, 1987. Fr. Apostolos received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1986 and then continued his studies at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology, graduating with a Master of Divinity degree in 1988. During his studies, Fr. Apostolos tutored Byzantine Music classes for the theological students.
On October 2nd, 1988, Fr. Apostolos was ordained to the Holy Deaconate by His Eminence Metropolitan Iakovos of Chicago at the parish of Holy Apostles Greek Orthodox Church in Westchester, Illinois. On January 15, 1989 he was ordained to the Holy Priesthood at Assumption Greek Orthodox Church in Chicago by His Eminence Metropolitan Iakovos of Chicago and assigned as the associate pastor to Holy Apostles Church in Westchester, Illinois. In June 1994 he was assigned as Proistamenos to the parish of St. Barbara in Toms River, New Jersey. On October 7, 1996, Father Apostolos was assigned to the parish of St. Demetrios in Chicago in which he lovingly taught, preached, and comforted the many Orthodox Christians under his care. On October 26, 2014, Fr. Apostolos was elevated to the rank of protopresbyter by His Eminence Metropolitan Iakovos of Chicago.
Father Apostolos and Presbytera Sophia have three beautiful children: Presbytera Katerina (Fr. Stamatios) Sfikas, Nicholas and Anastasios. They are also proud and blessed grandparents of Anastasia, Sophia and Styliani.
